Every month, I curate a digest of the most interesting posts I’ve come across in the last four weeks.
These can be simple blog posts or articles, infographics, and even podcasts, as long as they deal with the same topic: Shopify SEO.

1. Product Comparison Keywords: A Foot-In-The-Door SEO Strategy
Shopify websites tend to just be endless catalogs of products.
No matter your niche, your site is divided into product categories, and ideally, you would like to rank at the top for those specific product keywords.
In this blog post, Sam Partland teaches us about product comparison keywords.
While typical product keywords focus on just one item (for example, Dell XPS 15), product comparison keywords put two items against each other (Dell XPS 15 vs. Macbook Pro).
Naturally, product comparison keywords have a much lower search volume—but their competition is also a lot lower.
Product comparison keywords are a great strategy for newer websites looking to grab easy rankings. Sam explores the topic in great depth in his latest blog post.
I totally recommend reading this and think of ways to implement this strategy for your Shopify store.
My tip: in the same vein, you should try alternative to-keywords. For example, if you sell a Dell XPS 15, create a page marketing it as an alternative to the Macbook Pro and target the keyword “alternative to macbook pro”.
2. Roundup: May 2020’s Best Digital Tactics
This is what I call a Roundupception.
Although they are not strictly about SEO, Northcutt’s Monthly Roundup has a section dedicated to search engine optimization, and it is really well curated.
The posts are relevant (Diagnosing Traffic Drops During a Crisis) and come from some of the top authoritative blogs in the industry (MoZ, SearchEngineJournal, etc.).
There’s even a post about E-commerce, which makes me believe that this roundup is going to be relevant for Shopify & E-commerce marketers in the future. 🙂

3. The May 2020 Google Core Update — 4 Case Studies
On May 4th, Google announced that they were rolling out the second core search algorithm update of the year.
Core updates are designed to improve the algorithm—in other words, help Google present content relevant to the user’s search query.
If you have lost rankings, there is not much you can do besides making sure your website is helpful to Google’s visitors.
GSQi went into a pretty intense analysis of this core update, presenting four case studies from websites recovering (and not recovering) from the update, and the changes they made to their websites in each scenario.
