What are the best Shopify SEO apps out there?

This question comes up regularly when I work for Shopify clients.

There’s an overwhelming amount of apps and plugins to choose from—and if you’re just a beginner, that can be a little intimidating.

With this blog post, I want to remove the uncertainty that comes with picking a new SEO app.

Every app, listed down here in no particular order, will be given a score of one to five stars and a complete review.

Full disclaimer: I am not affiliated with any of the apps on this list, so my reviews are 100% genuine.

Not sure which app is the best for your Shopify store? Read on, weigh the pros and cons, and install a new one today.

1. JSON-LD for SEO

json-ld shopify seo app

My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Price:
$299 one-time charge
Free trial: not available

What it does:
JSON-LD for SEO enables rich results and rich snippets for your Shopify store, essentially turning Google into a shopping window to your website:

Rich results give searchers more information about your products before the user even clicks through to your store.

Google likes this a lot, as it means less back-and-forth between SERPs and websites. The more organized, the better.

My review:
I’ve gotten this app installed on every single one of my client’s websites (when relevant).

Rich snippets are incredible for click-through and conversion rates: they take up more space, they are more colorful… they simply stand out in search results.

The problem is that they’re a pain to set up and maintain, especially on Shopify. There’s hundreds of fields to fill out and pages to test.

JSON-LD for SEO removes that pain by setting everything up for you. Once the app is installed… you’re done!

If you want to add rich results to your store, this is the plugin you want.

You can check if your individual pages are eligible for rich results by using Google’s Rich Results Test Tool.

As a bonus, Eric Davis (the founder) is excellent at support and will answer all of your questions about JSON-LD or his app in a timely manner.

It does come at a hefty price tag, but it is well worth it!

2. TinyIMG SEO Image Optimizer

tinyimg shopify seo app

My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Price:
between $0.99/mo. and $9.99/mo., depending on usage
Free trial: not available

What it does:
TinyIMG SEO Image Optimizer automatically converts, compresses and optimizes your images, in both JPG and WebP formats (hint: you need both).

The app also generates alt tags and image titles according to a template of your liking.

My review:
Shopify websites have by nature tons of images.

If you care about optimizing your page speed, then you care about optimizing your images, too.

TinyIMG does just that, automatically, for both existing and new products.

The app also gives the option to resize oversized images.

In other words, it will download only the image size your user needs (as opposed to the full size), something I often see lacking in other image optimization apps—even though it’s extremely important for your overall speed.

All in all, TinyIMG does its job for a very reasonable price.

3. AMP By Shop Sheriff

amp shop sheriff seo app

My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Price:
between $9/mo. and $99/mo., depending on usage and features
Free trial: Yes, there is a free plan available

What it does:
AMP by Shop Sheriff enables Accelerated Mobile Pages on your Shopify store.

Accelerated Mobile Pages is a technology developed by Google to speed up mobile web browsing and helps webpages to be served more quickly.

My review:
It’s no secret that speed is a massive issue with most Shopify stores.

Can AMP help with that? Definitely.

This plugin will replicate your existing theme and convert your products, collections, blogs and pages to AMP format, making your store a lot faster on mobile, and adding the lightning bolt icon to your URL in Google’s search results:

Keep in mind that AMP severely limits your design options: “fancy” extras like sliders, magnifying glasses, or pop-ups might have to go.

Overall, AMP by Shop Sheriff only does one thing, but it does it really well.

If you’re looking to convert some of your pages to AMP, I definitely recommend this app.

4. Bulk Image Edit

bulk image edit seo app

My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Price:
between $9.99/mo. and $49.99/mo., depending on usage and features
Free trial: Yes, there is a free plan available

What it does:
Bulk Image Edit is an image optimization app with a plethora of features: PNG to JPG, add or remove watermarks, alt text editing, trim… and more!

All of these operations can be done in bulk.

My review:
Bulk Image Edit is my go-to app when I have to work with large websites.

As stated in their name, bulk editing is what they do best.

Need to run a promotion for a day? Add your design to every product on your site, or specific collections only, in just a few clicks:

When it comes to SEO-related tasks, the app is just as amazing, as it allows you to edit all of your alt texts, as well as compress and resize your images—within seconds.

The only bad thing about this app is that it takes a while to get used to.

The interface, with its dozens of menus and options, is a bit overwhelming at first and they could have done a better job at on-boarding new users.

Overall, this is a really good plugin that I’ve always been happy with.

5. SEO Products Optimizer

seo products optimizer app

My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Price:
$14/mo.
Free trial: No, but there is a free plan available

What it does:
SEO Products Optimizer takes you through several SEO optimization steps to improve your product pages.

My review:
Because I believe that SEO is difficult enough by itself, my own tool was designed with simplicity in mind.

So—when I see other apps doing the same, I can only encourage the trend.

SEO Products Optimizer is a new app (only 38 reviews at the time of writing this blog post), but it looks awesome so far.

I decided to create a page with very little SEO optimization done to see if the plugin would detect it, and it did the job beautifully:

I like the fact that you can decide to either optimize your content or optimize your images, and that unlike other apps, optimizing your JSON-LD is optional. You’re in control here.

As you write your product pages, the app gives you recommendations to improve your content for SEO:

I wouldn’t be surprised if the author got inspired by Yoast, the most popular WordPress SEO plugin. And he’s doing a great job at recreating that plugin for Shopify!

According to reviews, the support for it is great, too.

I highly recommend giving this app a try.

6. Smart SEO

smart seo app

My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Price:
$4.99/mo.
Free trial: 7 days

What it does:
Smart SEO generates alt tags, sitemaps, meta tags and JSON-LD structured data for your Shopify store. The plugin also supports multi-language stores.

My review:
Smart SEO is one of the many automatic alt texts and meta tags generator apps out there.

For each of your products, collections, blogs and standalone pages, the plugin will calculate an SEO score and give you recommendations to improve it.

This is a great app for both beginners and more experienced SEOs.

The best part? Smart SEO supports multi-language stores. It also comes at a very reasonable monthly price.

7. Sitemap & NoIndex Manager

sitemap noindex manager seo app

My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Price:
$4.99/mo.
Free trial: 5 days

What it does:
Sitemap & NoIndex Manager helps you control your sitemap, your noindex and nofollow tags, and generally improve your SEO.

My review:
The problem with Shopify sitemaps is that they’re entirely generated and controlled by Shopify.

In general, this is fine, but in some cases, you might want to tell Google not to index certain pages.

For example, thin content pages (pages that have very little value for the user). In the long run, those pages can hurt your SEO.

Do you really need your “Team” or “About Us” page to be indexed? Or are those pages on your site simply for curious users to visit?

Think about it this way: if people aren’t gonna search for those pages on Google… they probably don’t need to be indexed.

Duplicate content isn’t rare on Shopify (yoursite.com/collections/product/product-name vs. yoursite.com/products/product-name), and the plugin helps you in the process of properly reorganizing your site.

There’s one thing I wish the app would do better: as of now, the interface is really, really confusing.

There’s a lot of misspelling here and there, not to mention that the app doesn’t give you much direction as to what its buttons do or how much time your store need for the changes to take effect.

8. AVADA SEO

avada shopify seo app

My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Price:
Free
Free trial: Yes, it’s free forever

What it does:
AVADA SEO is an all-in-one Shopify SEO app that contains everything needed to fix your SEO and monitor your store’s overall health: image optimization, meta tags, structured data, sitemap, and more.

My review:
The first thing I have to commend AVADA for is that it allows you to enable or disable any option from the get-go:

So if you’re already using, say, JSON-LD for all of your structured data needs, AVADA won’t tamper with it.

Apps that work with each other are very rare, so I’m glad to see AVADA take a step in the right direction here.

Their dashboard is full of extensive and helpful advice.

The plugin also does an excellent job at automatically detecting potential SEO issues and explaining how to fix them, which makes for a great, beginner-friendly dashboard:

They have a pretty comprehensive documentation, but because it has poor grammar and the articles feel a little congested, the docs can be hard to read and understand, especially for beginners.

The good news? AVADA is free—forever.

9. SEO Image Optimizer Pro

seo image optimizer app

My rating: ⭐⭐⭐
Price:
Free
Free trial: Yes, it’s free forever

What it does:
SEO Image Optimizer Pro does one thing and one thing only: it adds alt text to all of your product images (with a given template).

My review:
It’s a very simple app: if your alt texts aren’t optimized yet, SEO Image Optimizer Pro will take care of them for you.

It’s a quick setup and it takes just a few minutes for alt texts to be synchronized for your entire store.

My only problem with this plugin is that it advertises itself as an image optimizer, yet they do nothing to optimize the images themselves.

A decent app if you’re looking for a free alternative to other, more complete image apps and if you only need to fix your alt texts.

10. Plug in SEO

plugin shopify seo app

My rating: ⭐⭐⭐
Price:
$20/mo, offers a free plan with limited features
Free trial: 7 days

What it does:
Plug in SEO is another all-in-one “SEO power tool” for Shopify, with a myriad of tools that help you identify and fix potential problems with your site: structured data, meta tags, image alt texts, bulk editing, etc.

My review:
Plug in SEO is the first app to ask me what keywords I’m targeting.

This is a good sign: if an app is designed to improve your overall SEO, then it should know what your goals are and which keywords you are tracking first.

The suggestions make sense and the app is pretty easy to use, with an impressive documentation and helpful articles.

It’s a shame, however, that most of the features (JSON-LD, search trends, titles and descriptions) need to be paid for.

Plug in SEO doesn’t explain what they are doing better than AVADA—and why merchants should pay $20/month for the app (besides Premium support).

Out of all the apps I’ve analyzed today, Plug in SEO is also the one with the highest amount of 1-star reviews on the Shopify app store.

Overall, this seems like a decent plugin, but I fail to see the full value of it.

11. SEO Master

seo master shopify app

My rating: ⭐⭐
Price:
$12.99/mo. or $10/mo. when billed yearly
Free trial: 7 days as well as a free plan

What it does:
SEO Master is another SEO plugin and all-in-one tool for Shopify.

The app helps you with creating a sitemap, discovering new keyword opportunities, and scanning your site for potential SEO improvements.

My review:
This app can get a little confusing at first, and it takes some time getting used to it.

For example, one of my pages has, according to the app, five critical issues and an SEO Score of 38:

Yet if I try to edit the page to optimize it further, SEO Master will inform me that this page has a score of 75 already:

With that said, there’s a lot of things this plugin does right.

I was happy to see, for example, that the whole website is scanned for keywords that are already in use, so your store doesn’t suffer from keyword cannibalization (which is not rare when it comes to Shopify sites).

This is also the first and only app I’ve found that makes use of Google Autosuggest to come up with new keyword ideas for your store.

All in all, this is a pretty decent app for its price, but it does fall short compared to other plugins on this list.

12. SEO Booster

seo booster shopify seo app

My rating: ⭐
Price:
$18.99/mo, offers a free plan with limited features
Free trial: 7 days

What it does:
SEO Booster positions itself as an “automatic SEO booster”.

It scans the website for potential SEO issues (missing meta tags, missing image alt text, missing JSON-LD, broken links management…) and returns a list of recommended fixes, with the option to let the app do the job for you.

My review:
SEO Booster starts off by evaluating your site’s overall SEO score.

It’s a good idea and I’d love to know how healthy my site is. Unfortunately, they don’t show us how the score is calculated nor what elements are factored in.

The FAQ is poor and doesn’t include any explanation about this.

Besides that, I’ve experimented with removing the meta description from that site entirely to see what sort of advice SEO Booster would give me:

The app did a good job at detecting the problem. Pressing the Improve it button, I get an encouraging confirmation message:

But if I check out the Bulk Edit menu… it doesn’t seem like the app actually did anything:

SEO booster does offer an option to bulk edit meta tags and image alt texts, but overall, the interface is confusing and difficult to understand because of poor grammar.

Some of the reviews also mention that the app doesn’t remove its own JSON-LD code properly if you try to delete the app. I haven’t been able to replicate the problem, but this is something to keep in mind.

Overall, I think SEO Booster works if you’re looking for a low-range app and you know what you’re doing, but if you’re looking for the best Shopify SEO apps out there, there are definitely better options.
